Reflections Around Wix.com

ODU Lifespan and Digital Communication Graduate Student

In an era where globalization, intercultural communication and digital media are invading the everyday life of human beings, to own social media and create e-Portfolios is a must.

No matter your traditionalism and adversity towards the new and always-progressing high technology, you find yourself absorbed by a vortex, one that is "sucking" (note the quotation) your own self into its center, that black hole which is the need of having to adapt to the new generation and from which you will never, no longer, be able to escape.

Unlike the past, when it was common to spend leisure time surrounded by toys and books, while mom was cooking your favorite meal and flipping magazine pages, and dad reading the newspaper sitting on his favorite armchair with a cigarette, today, it is all different: We are all polarized, for hours, day and night, in front of a screen, being this the new television, a tablet, a cellphone and, rarely nowadays, a computer. TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, all of these new platforms are brainwashing our smart minds destroying, somewhat, communication.

But what can we do? Nothing really but accepting the new way!

Although this new method of communicating is not my thing, I find the ability of talking with my family overseas daily quite delightful and heartwarming; paying my bills virtually and receiving important e-mails extremely helpful; and not having to wander from place to place for submitting a resume on top of which is, like a cherry on top, written by typewriter even relieving. Yes, exactly: Relieving!

Through the now-surpassed MySpace, I learned how to create e-pages and found my own creative-self; after eight long years of pondering whether or not it would be beneficial to dedicate some good time to a professional account, last year, I finally created my first LinkedIn profile, particularly motivated by the desire, if not extreme need, of changing job.

Thanks to LinkedIn I have been exposed to the new era, the new generation and the way of being noted, followed (Who doesn't like being "popular", after all!), and offered a myriad of jobs, which, excluding one, I have proudly declined due to the "Nope, that is not what I want; I have high standards!". Thanks to social media, I have realized how important it is to advertise your own presence, nowadays. No one will gift you free advertisement; you have to put in the work. If you really want to achieve a goal, you must follow that path, believe in yourself, and keep going no matter the obstacles.

The new era of doing things has helped a genius create online University programs which are allowing people like me. full-timers and heads of the house, to continue their studies, an interest that was quite impossible to feed decades ago. Thanks to this amazing high tech, wi-fi, and the internet, I am typing this insightful blog post about Wix.com, at night and in my own home office, which is very much impressive.

With past leisure and current work experience, creating my first Wix ePortfolio has been definitely time-consuming but somehow easy.

Wix seems to be self-explanatory. The easiest part was obviously creating an account; and, thus far, the only issue I have experienced is the concern of having damaged a complete page upon adding a new one. I had no idea that the header is automatically added to most of the newly added pages, and for it not to be visible settings must be changed.

That really took days for me to understand, although I had sought help from Customer Service. In not even a month, though, I have something else, a useful product to add to my resume, which is not only an ePortfolio but also the knowledge of creating a webpage.

I find myself proud and thrilled about showcasing this new addition to my persona.

I might have spent much time creating this "master piece" -i.e., my first Wix ePortfolio; however, like with LinkedIn, I am sure greatness is here to come. With that, I cannot wait to dedicate some extra time to this website and enhance it; I look forward to elaborating the mobile version and, moreover, translating the site content into other languages, especially Sicilian.

Feedback, ideas for improvement, and inquiries are all welcomed 😊.
